Mardi Gras Has Begun!

Yay! I thought when I moved here three years ago, that Mardi Gras was an overrated party for drunk tourists. Little did I know, that this would soon become my second favorite time of year. Christian grew up with Mardi Gras celebrated in both New Orleans and Mobile (the birth place of Mardi Gras in the states). Don't get me wrong there are plenty of drunk, sloppy tourists, but if you know where to go, Mardi Gras is a truly unique display of culture. Plus it's a really good party!

Although the season technically begins with Kings Day on January 6th, we start celebrating with Krewe du Vieux. It's one of the few parades that runs through our part of town. It's different from all the other parades in that it is a celebration of artists and street performers, and all the floats feature political puns and sarcasm. This year Christian was working :( but my mom was in town :) and it was her first experience with Mardi Gras. What an introduction! Here's how it went down (viewer discretion is advised):

Goodell was a reoccurring theme

The next night my mom and I saw B.B. King at Tipitina's

A Week in Dinners

I plan our meals out at the beginning of the week and only shop for the ingredients needed for those meals. I post everything to the bulletin board in our kitchen (see the making of the bulletin board here). Most of the recipes I get from Real Simple, always looking for fast and seasonal. I try to use my crock pot as much as possible, usually at least one meal a week. And finally, I always make at least one soup a week, that way there are always easy leftovers when we don't feel like cooking. I've been lucky the last month because Christian has been off and cooking all our meals. He goes back tomorrow, so I will have to take back over. These are all his creations:

Sunday:

Purple cauliflower

Wednesday:

roasted cauliflower, butternut squash, and beets

Friday:

leftover chicken from the night before

1239 Congress Presents...

An Anniversary Party!

Over the past year 1239 Congress, a multi-use space that creatively engages the surrounding community through arts and education in the upper 9th ward, has hosted live music, Second Saturday openings, community meetings, NOLA Mix DJ classes, Fringe Festival performances, and more. We have had the opportunity to be apart of the formation of this non-profit over the past year.  It's one of the many things that keeps us busy.  In fact our 1239 Congress Anniversary Party is this weekend at the Hi-Ho Lounge.
